Chem 360 Advanced Physical Chemistry I

This course will examine the thermodynamics and kinetics which govern the chemical changes of matter. In the first half, the behavior or real gases, heat/work, enthalpy/entropy, and Helmholtz/Gibbs energies will be covered. The course will continue by examining the transformations of pure/mixed phases, and summarize these concepts with phase diagrams. The second half of the course will start with the kinetic theory of gases and its implications for various properties and diffusion in the solid, liquid, and gas state. Various rate laws and transition state theory will be covered to explain how chemical reactions occur. Electron transfer will also be covered, and additional topics based on student/instructor choice will be included at the end.
