PSE 103 Chemistry and Thermodynamics II
This course consists of two components: Chemistry and Thermodynamics. It considers each of these components.
Chemistry component:
1. Accuracy and precision. Significant figures. Scientific notation. Basic experimental quantities. Unit conversion. Math basics.
2. Avogadro’s number, mole, amount, molar mass, formula unit, formula mass. Formula stoichiometry. Empirical formula, molecular formula. Reaction stoichiometry, balancing equation. Chemical quantities, limiting reagent, yield. Classification of chemical reactions. Direction of chemical reaction and energy. Direction of chemical reaction and entropy.
3. Solute and solvent. Intermolecular forces. Solution equilibrium. Dissolving effects. Concentration.
4. Rate laws. Reaction orders. The Arrhenius equation. Integrated rate laws. Half life. Reaction mechanisms. Catalysis.
5. Acid/base/salt definitions and classification. Strengths of acids and bases. Reactions between acids and bases, net ionic equations. Ionization constant, percent of ionization. Common ion effect. Polyprotic acids.
6. Solubility. Ionization of water. pH scale. Hydrolysis. Buffers. Indicators. Titration.
7. Oxidation state and oxidation number. Oxidation-reduction reactions. Voltaic cells. Standard cell potentials. Nernst equation. Electrolysis.
Thermodynamics component:
1. Entropy.
2. Heat transfer and conduction.
3. Thermochemistry.
4. Chemical and phase equilibrium.
5. Thermal radiation.
