BESE 200 Bio Lab
The course provides first hands-on experience in a molecular and cellular biology laboratory setting, exposing the students to a number of techniques that are commonly used in biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology research laboratories. These experiments are: Tissue culture, enzyme kinetics, spectrophotometry, plasmid transformation, plasmid isolation and digestion, protein expression and purification, introduction to small- interfering RNAs (siRNA) and gene expression, isolation of RNA, quantification and analysis of gene expression using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and RT-qPCR, cell culture, cell treatment and cell labeling, immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy, as well as flowcytometry. The course will have an introductory part (Tutorial) providing the necessary background for the student to follow with the practical part. A manual for each experiment will be available to the students. Students will present their experiment outcome at the end each experiment via oral presentation or by writing a lab report.
